Adjournment Crystal Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission Minutes – Neighborhood Meeting Minutes May 7, 2025 Sunnyview Park The Parks and Recreation Commission Neighborhood Meeting was called to order at 6:30 pm by Commission Chair Jesse McCaffrey. Commission members in attendance: Jesse McCaffrey (Chair), Lynn Haney (Vice-Chair), Terri Schultz (Secretary), Dave Anderson, J.D. Moore II, Angela Spores and Kassidy Swanson. Also present were John Budziszewski (Council Liaison); Adam Bell, John Elholm, Chief Revering, Brad Fortin, and Michelle Margo from the City Staff Commission members absent: Joyce Cooper and Alex Popp City Manager Adam Bell talked about upcoming development projects within the city of Crystal. Chief Revering informed residents of common issues in the Sunnyview neighborhood and upcoming city events such as Junior Police Academy and MN Night to Unite. John Elholm presented information on upcoming park projects, including improvements at the Crystal Cove Aquatic Center and Twin Oaks Park. Brad Fortin highlighted park maintenance and projects related to tree removal and replacement. Michelle Margo gave an update on recreation programs and events, including the upcoming Friends of Crystal Parks Plant Sale and Young Mudder events. A resident received a Crystal Recreation gift certificate in a drawing. The meeting was adjourned at 7:10 pm. Crystal Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission Minutes May 7, 2025 Sunnyview Park The Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission Meeting was called to order at 7:18 p.m. by Commission Chair Jesse McCaffrey. Commission members in attendance: Jesse McCaffrey (Chair), Lynn Haney (Vice-Chair), Terri Schultz (Secretary), Dave Anderson, J.D. Moore II, Angela Spores and Kassidy Swanson. Also present were John Budziszewski (Council Liaison); John Elholm, Brad Fortin and Michelle Margo from the City Staff. Commission members absent: Joyce Cooper and Alex Popp Haney made a motion to approve the Tree Board Minutes, Moore seconded the motion. The Tree Board minutes were approved as written. McCaffrey made a motion to approve the April Park and Recreation Commission minutes; Spores seconded the motion. The Park and Recreation Commission minutes for April were approved as written. Commission members reviewed submissions for the Crystal Frolics button design contest. First, Second and Third place winners were determined. Elholm gave project and planning updates. The Crystal Cove Aquatic Center is moving along nicely, with construction happening in both the pool and pool building. A celebration of the new facility is scheduled for June 25. Bids for work at Twin Oaks Park came in under budget and a contractor has been approved by the city council. The basketball court in Welcome Park will be rebuilt this summer in a different location – closer to the play area. Preliminary planning is underway for 2026 park projects. Grant applications are being submitted for projects in North Lions, Woodland and MAC Parks. Budziszewski provided a council update. He mentioned an upcoming strategic planning meeting with senior staff and city council. He also discussed a desire to promote Crystal more, telling our story and no mow May. Fortin gave reports on park maintenance. He highlighted tree removal, work on landscape beds, preparing sports fields and preparations that took place for the Arbor Day event. Margo gave reports on recreation programming. She highlighted the Friends of Crystal Parks Plant Sale, Young Mudder and other programs. She also reviewed the dance program that concluded with a dance recital on April 27. The group is planning their plant sale on May 17. They need plant donations and encourage people to come and buy! Haney made a motion to adjourn the meeting; McCaffrey seconded the motion. Crystal Cove Aquatic Center Construction at the Crystal Cove Aquatic Center is nearing completion. The front entrance of the building now has windows and new doors. The main pool is complete, and is being filled with water. Final surfacing is being applied to the zero depth pool, and this will be filled soon too. The pool will open to the public the second week of June, with a celebration and ribbon cutting event planned for the evening of June 25. Improvements are being made to community center service counter. The old counter has been removed. The new counter will provide improved accessibility for visitors and a better work space for staff. Twin Oaks Park Twin Oaks Park is being redeveloped. Concrete has been poured for the play area, picnic shelter, and veteran’s memorial patio. Paving the trails and basketball court are next, with the play area & shelter installation early in July. Crystal Community Center PROGRAM SUMMARYJUNE 2025 Below is an overview of the programs offered by the Crystal Recreation Department, along with occasional recaps of key special events we host. Summer Adventures & Summer Blast Our playground programs offer enriching, themed weeks designed to spark creativity and fun. Each program promotes sportsmanship, friendship, and a summer full of memories! Summer Adventures (ages 4–6) & Summer Blast (ages 7–12). All ages are invited to enjoy magical Storytimes with Princess Party Pals, hosted in the cities of Crystal, Golden Valley, New Hope, and Robbinsdale. Crystal Storytime, Paw Patrol will be held Wednesday, June 18, 10:30-11:15am at Becker Park. Swim Lessons Crystal swim lessons are back— more popular than ever, with sessions full and waitlists forming! These classes focus on building water safety skills, boosting confidence, and helping swimmers feel comfortable and secure in the water.
