Drawing for Recreation Gift Certificate Crystal Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission - Neighborhood Meeting Minutes June 7, 2023 Becker Park The Parks and Recreation Commission Neighborhood Meeting was called to order at 7:05 pm by Commission Chair Tony Sumnicht. Commission members in attendance: Tony Sumnicht (Chair), Jesse McCaffrey (Vice-Chair), Jennifer Zielinski (Secretary), Shaz Ahmadi, Dave Anderson, and Joyce Cooper. Also present were; Adam Bell, John Elholm, John Sutter, Chief Revering, Brad Fortin, and Scott Berggren from the City Staff and Taji Onesirosan and David Cummings from the city council. Commission members absent: Lynn Haney. Park and Recreation Commission members and City staff made introductions. Mr. Sumnicht presented awards to the 2023 Crystal Frolics Button Contest Winners. John Sutter provided information on current and upcoming city projects. Adam Bell discussed the current business in the city, including the bi-annual budget. Chief Revering informed residents of how the department is supporting the community. John Elholm presented information on upcoming park projects. Brad Fortin highlighted recent and upcoming park maintenance activities. Scott Berggren gave an update on programs and events in the Recreation Department. A resident received a Crystal Community Center activity gift certificate in a drawing. The meeting was adjourned at 7:35 pm. John Elholm Recorder Crystal Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission Minutes June 7, 2023 Becker Park The Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission Meeting was called to order at 7:42 p.m. by Commission Chair Tony Sumnicht. Commission members in attendance: Tony Sumnicht (Chair), Jesse McCaffrey (Vice-Chair), Jennifer Zielinski (Secretary), Shaz Ahmadi, Dave Anderson, and Joyce Cooper. Also present were; John Elholm, Brad Fortin, and Scott Berggren from the City Staff. Commission members absent: Lynn Haney. There was no public comment. Ms. Zielinski made a motion to approve the May Neighborhood minutes; Mr. Anderson seconded the motion. The Neighborhood minutes for May were approved as written. Mr. McCaffrey made a motion to approve the May Park and Recreation Commission minutes; Ms. Zielinski seconded the motion. The Park and Recreation Commission minutes for May were approved as written. Mr. Sumnicht gave the chairperson’s report. He shared that the Frolics committee will have a meeting on June 26. Mr. Berggren discussed the format of the June 21 bus tour. Key destinations will include parks outside of Crystal with 4-season community buildings and larger picnic shelters in preparation for these types of facilities being added in Crystal. Mr. Elholm gave an update on park projects. During the commission meeting, mockups of two signs intended for display at the new dog park were presented. The commission liked the layout and design of the signs, along with the wording in the mockups. The bridge has been installed at Bassett Creek Park, while the disc golf course will have baskets and tee pads installed in July. The new dog park has seen the successful installation of trails and bench pads. Developments have taken place in two neighborhood parks. At Crystal Highlands Park, progress includes pouring a concrete pad for the shelter. At Broadway Park, changes included removing the play area and other site preparation activities. The Crystal Cove Aquatic Center received approval for $2.3 million through state legislation. This funding, combined with funds from the city, will address the leaking deep end (original structure) of the pool. Commission member Jesse McCaffrey presented on the importance of multigenerational recreation during the open forum, which was followed by discussion. There was no City Council report. Crystal Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission Minutes – Page 2 June 7, 2023 Mr. Fortin gave reports for park maintenance and Mr. Berggren for recreation programming. Mr. Elholm gave the Director’s report. Staff has been working on the bi-annual budget, and minimal changes are expected as the entire two-year budget was submitted last year. The partnership between the city and Fair School in Crystal remains strong following soccer field installation. Mr. Elholm was recently invited to participate in a panel at the school to help select their ideal student. Mr. Sumnicht gave a Crystal Frolics report. The Crystal Frolics Committee is seeking volunteers to help with the event. Mr. Elholm gave the Friends of Crystal Parks report. They made around $2,000 during their plant sale on May 20. Mr. McCaffrey made a motion to adjourn the meeting; Ms. Zielinski seconded the motion. The commission adjourned the meeting at 8:35 pm. These projects will be taking place at numerous parks and buildings throughout the city. Hydroseeding Hydroseeding was recently done at Bassett Creek, near the new parking lot and dog park. The process will transform the designated areas into green spaces, enhancing the park's appearance. New Picnic Shelters The framing for the new picnic shelters at Cavanagh and Broadway Parks is complete. These shelters will soon provide a perfect spot for picnics and gatherings, offering shade and a welcoming environment for park visitors. Park Paving Projects Paving for the basketball courts at Broadway and Cavanagh and the parking lots at the Community Center and Bassett Creek Dog Park are underway. The enhancements will provide a new surface and improved accessibility for visitors. Welcome Park Building Welcome Park's building was upgraded with a new soffit and fascia. These additions enhance appearance and functionality, providing a polished look while protecting against the elements. P R O G R A M S U M M A R Y J U L Y 2 0 2 3 Below is a highlight of the programs offered by the Crystal Recreation Department. Occasionally we will recap some key special events we offer. Parks & Recreation Month Mayor Adams has declared July 2023 as Parks and Recreation Month in Crystal. This proclamation aims to emphasize how parks and recreational activities contribute to the enhancement of our community. Family Storytime The 2023 Crystal Frolics community celebration will happen July 27-30 at Becker and Welcome Park. New for this year will be a pickleball tournament and an upcycle event to go with inflatables, softball, fireworks, and more. The Family Storytime series comes to Becker Park on July 12 with Goldilocks. Last month's storytime was a huge success, and the upcoming storytime promises to be an excellent experience for all ages too. On July 15, the Three Rivers Park District Outdoor Recreation School will host a family outdoor experience at Becker Park. They aim to bring outdoor activities, like a climbing wall, to first-tier suburbs like Crystal. Crystal Frolics Three Rivers Experience
