Mr. Sumnicht gave the chairperson’s report. He shared that the Frolics committee will have a
meeting on June 26.
Mr. Berggren discussed the format of the June 21 bus tour. Key destinations will include parks
outside of Crystal with 4-season community buildings and larger picnic shelters in preparation
for these types of facilities being added in Crystal.
Mr. Elholm gave an update on park projects. During the commission meeting, mockups of two
signs intended for display at the new dog park were presented. The commission liked the layout
and design of the signs, along with the wording in the mockups. The bridge has been installed
at Bassett Creek Park, while the disc golf course will have baskets and tee pads installed in July.
The new dog park has seen the successful installation of trails and bench pads. Developments
have taken place in two neighborhood parks. At Crystal Highlands Park, progress includes
pouring a concrete pad for the shelter. At Broadway Park, changes included removing the play
area and other site preparation activities. The Crystal Cove Aquatic Center received approval for
$2.3 million through state legislation. This funding, combined with funds from the city, will
address the leaking deep end (original structure) of the pool.
Commission member Jesse McCaffrey presented on the importance of multigenerational
recreation during the open forum, which was followed by discussion.

Below is a highlight of the projects that will be happening in
the City of Crystal. These projects will be taking place at
numerous parks and buildings throughout the city.

transform the designated areas into green spaces,
enhancing the park's appearance.

Recreation Department. Occasionally we will recap some
key special events we offer.
Parks & Recreation Month

Recreation Month in Crystal. This proclamation aims to
emphasize how parks and recreational activities
contribute to the enhancement of our community.
Family Storytime
The 2023 Crystal Frolics community celebration will
happen July 27-30 at Becker and Welcome Park. New for
this year will be a pickleball tournament and an upcycle
event to go with inflatables, softball, fireworks, and more.
The Family Storytime series comes to Becker Park on

huge success, and the upcoming storytime promises to
be an excellent experience for all ages too.
On July 15, the Three Rivers Park District Outdoor
Recreation School will host a family outdoor experience
at Becker Park. They aim to bring outdoor activities, like
a climbing wall, to first-tier suburbs like Crystal.
