Zoom Meeting
The Parks and Recreation Commission Tree Board meeting was called to order at 6:45pm by
Crystal Tree Board chair Tony Sumnicht.
Tree Board members in attendance were: Dave Anderson, Joyce Cooper Erin Kolb, Jesse
McCaffrey and Tony Sumnicht. Also present were David Cummings, Council Liaison; John
Elholm, Brad Fortin and Scott Berggren from the City Staff.
Tree Board members absent were: Lynn Haney & Shaz Ahmadi
Others: Forest Eidbo
Mr. Fortin reviewed the Forestry Annual report, highlighting work that was done in the past
year. Crystal currently has five certified tree inspectors. Their main focus throughout the year is
doing tree inspections, maintenance and replacement. City staff and contractors removed 210
trees in the past year; 72 of which were hazardous. The goal is one for one replacement. The
replacement trees being planted come from a wide species variety. The goal is to have no more
than 5% of any specie within Crystal. A tree nursery was created on the old public works site to
create an accessible and more cost-effective source for trees.
Tree Board members discussed the May 5 Arbor Day event. With the Covid-19 pandemic
limiting group gatherings, the event will be held both in-person and virtually. The in-person
event will be held at Iron Horse Park; with a park clean-up at 6pm and other activities beginning
at 6:30pm. City staff will also create a virtual website to provide resources to Crystal residents.
The City will give away 45 trees to residents (pollinator friendly). An online form will be created
for residents interested receiving a tree.
Ms. Kolb made a motion to adjourn the meeting; Mr. McCaffrey seconded the motion.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:03 pm
The next meeting is scheduled for April 6, 2022 at 6:45pm – at the Crystal Community Center
