Zoom Meeting
The Parks and Recreation Commission Tree Board meeting was called to order at 6:45pm by
Crystal Tree Board chair Jesse McCaffrey.
Tree Board members in attendance were: Lynn Haney, Lori Merriam, Jesse McCaffrey, Tony
Sumnicht, Erin Kolb, and Dave Anderson. Also present were John Elholm, Brad Fortin and Scott
Berggren from the City Staff.
Tree Board members absent were: Andy Leipold, Joyce Cooper, Meredith Torres-Walsh & Shaz
Ahmadi
Mr. Fortin reviewed the Forestry Annual report, highlighting work that was done in the past
year. Crystal currently has five certified tree inspectors. Their main focus throughout the year is
doing tree inspections, maintenance and replacement. Due to COVID-19 tree inspector
recertification classes have been postponed. As new trees are planted, a wider variety of tree
species are being used. The goal is to have no more than 5% of any specie within Crystal. A tree
nursery was created on the old public works site to create an accessible and more cost effective
source for trees.
Tree Board members discussed the May 6 Arbor Day event. With the Covid-19 pandemic
limiting group gatherings, the event will be held virtually. City staff will create a virtual concept
to provide resources to Crystal residents. Parks will still giveaway 40 trees to residents. The
Recreation Department will come up with a way for people to request trees.
Ms. Haney made a motion to adjourn the meeting; Ms. Kolb seconded the motion.
The meeting was adjourned at 6:56 pm
The next meeting is scheduled for April 7, 2021 at 6:45pm – at the Crystal Community Center
