Memorandum DATE: May 13, 2020 TO: Mayor and City Council FROM: Anne Norris, City Manager SUBJECT: Agreement with Wold Architects and Engineers – Police Station Project ____________________________________________________________________ Last October the City Council approved the hiring of Wold Architects and Enginners for architectural design services for a new police station on the City Hall campus. Since then, staff has been having regular meetings with representatives of Wold to design the new facility. The goals of the new facility are to address the following shortcomings of the Police Departments’s current space: - Evidence storage is not centralized and poses potential liability concerns - Locker rooms need to be expanded to accommodate c urrent and future staffing and current equipment needs - Department of Corrections audits of the jail fa cility consistently recommend upgrades to our jail - Interview rooms require soundproofing and technology upgrades - Sightlines in detention area need security improvements for staff safety - Gun storage and armory is utilizing a former closet and doesn’t meet security standards - Fleet is currently stored outside - Structural issues in existing garage space - Inefficient layout with functions scattered rather than clu stered Representatives of Wold and staff will present the preliminary police station plans for Council review and comment at the May 19 work session. Timing for the project is Council consideration of plans and specifications and advertising for bids late in 2020 for a 2021 construction start.
