SUBJECT: Agreement with Wold Architects and Engineers – Police Station Project
____________________________________________________________________
Last October the City Council approved the hiring of Wold Architects and Enginners for
architectural design services for a new police station on the City Hall campus. Since
then, staff has been having regular meetings with representatives of Wold to design the
new facility. The goals of the new facility are to address the following shortcomings of
the Police Departments’s current space:
- Evidence storage is not centralized and poses potential liability concerns
- Locker rooms need to be expanded to accommodate c urrent and future
staffing and current equipment needs
- Department of Corrections audits of the jail fa cility consistently recommend
upgrades to our jail
- Interview rooms require soundproofing and technology upgrades
- Sightlines in detention area need security improvements for staff safety
- Gun storage and armory is utilizing a former closet and doesn’t meet security
standards
- Fleet is currently stored outside
- Structural issues in existing garage space
- Inefficient layout with functions scattered rather than clu stered
Representatives of Wold and staff will present the preliminary police station plans for
Council review and comment at the May 19 work session.
Timing for the project is Council consideration of plans and specifications and
advertising for bids late in 2020 for a 2021 construction start.
