Memorandum DATE: July 2, 2018 TO: Mayor and City Council FROM: Anne Norris, City Manager Kim Therres, Assistant City Manager Stephanie Revering, Police Chief SUBJECT: Space Needs Study ____________________________________________________________________ One of the Council and staff’s financial priorities is developing a long term capital plan to better anticipate what funding will be needed. Last year, Wold Architects was hired primarily to complete a space needs study of the Police Department, and secondarily to look at how the administrative offices of City Hall are utilized and could be improved. The current Police Department layout and functions are less than ideal. The space is: - Inefficient o functional areas on two levels or not clustered together o multiple staff working out of shared work spaces o insufficient meeting and interview rooms - Outdated o the jail o the armory o vehicle storage is inadequate o insufficient locker room space - Safety and security are compromised o sallyport o detention/intake area o evidence intake, processing and storage The current space has been modified as the limited space allows to keep up with changes in police work and technology. Wold evaluated how the current Police space is used, what the Police needs are and developed multiple recommendations for reconfiguring the existing space as well as how to configure new space. Joel Dunning, Melissa Stein and Brandon Bryant of Wold will be at the July 12 work session to review several alternatives. Based on the Council’s comm ents, staff will work to incorporate the preferred option into the long term capital plan to be discussed at upcoming budget work sessions.
