The Parks and Recreation Commission Tree Board meeting was called to order at 6:45pm by
Park and Recreation Commission Chair Lori Merriam in the absence of the Tree Board chair.
Tree Board members in attendance were: Lynn Haney, Lori Merriam, Patrick Rosenquist, Tiffany
Kovaleski, and David Pascoe (via phone). Also present were John Elholm and Brad Fortin from
the City Staff.
Tree Board members absent were: Erin Kolb, Andy Leipold, Meredith Torres-Walsh
Mr. Fortin reviewed the Forestry Annual report, highlighting work that was done in the past
year. Main topics were the emergence of Emerald Ash Borer in Robbinsdale and Golden Valley.
Crystal currently has Ash as 26% of their tree stock. Public Works is being proactive and
removing city owned Ash trees that are showing sign of decline. Ash trees are being replaced
on a 1:1 basis throughout the City. As more trees are replaced and added, the goal is to
diversify the tree stock so there is only 5% of each tree species. The city of Crystal has a
moratorium of planting no new Maple trees on city properties for the next ten years. Maples
make up roughly another 25% of the existing tree inventory.
The Commission discussed the timeline for the upcoming Arbor Day event on Wednesday, May
2 at Kentucky Park. The schedule is as follows:
• 6:00pm - Park Clean-up
• 6:30pm - Program
• 6:35pm - Tree Planting
• 6:45pm - Tree Distribution
The Crystal Fund is donating money for the tree giveaway.
Tree Board members discussed refreshments at the event; and decided to again offer hot dogs,
chips, bottled water, etc. to event participants. Staff will secure the food license and all
supplies needed for the event.
Ms. Haney made a motion to adjourn the meeting; Mr. Rosenquist seconded the motion.
The meeting was adjourned at 6:58 pm
The next meeting is scheduled for April 3, 2019 at 6:45pm – at the Crystal Community Center
