Crystal Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission
December 3, 2014
Crystal Community Center
The Parks and Recreation Commission regular meeting was called to order at 7:02 pm by
Chairperson Jennifer Sodd. Commission members in attendance were: Lori Merriam,
Lynn Haney, Nancy LaRoche, Erin Kolb, Steve Hildre, Lassana Bamba Jr., Michael
McClain and Tom Jungroth. Also present were Brad Fortin, and Gene Hackett from the
city staff.
Brad Fortin was introduced as the new Parks and Buildings Superintendent. Commission
introductions were made.
The minutes were approved as sent.
Ms. Sodd gave the Chairperson’s Report. She announced that Aviva Hillenbrand will not
renew her appointment to the Commission and that she has also decided not to renew.
Commission members thanked her for her service. Ms. Kolb will renew. Elections were
held. 2015 officers are:
Chair Erin Kolb
Vice Chair Nancy LaRoche
Secretary Michael McClain
Winterfest assignments were reviewed.
Ms. Hackett updated the Commission on Hagmeister Park and loose dogs.
The Commission was informed that some residents came to the City Council Listening
time in regards to the Little Library at Memory Lane Park. They were not happy with the
decision to leave the location. Ms. Norris told them that there wasn’t anything to be done
over the winter. Ms. Hackett thinks the Council will refer this matter back to the
Commission in the spring.
The 2014 work plan status was finalized and reviewed. Ideas were suggested for 2015.
These include:
Commission to host a CBA meeting at the CCC
Look at the number of park benches in parks – think of adding more in certain
areas
Review of the Park section of the website.
Review plans for Yunker Park – building removal and trails
Work with staff regarding catering at the CCC

Additional discussion took place on review of the park section of the website. A
subcommittee was formed: Lassana, Erin, Steve and Nancy. Scott will represent the staff.
A subcommittee meeting will be scheduled before the next Commission meeting.
The final draft of the Commission Long Range Plan was reviewed.
Moved by Ms. LaRoche and Seconded by Ms. Merriam to accept
the 2014 revised Commission Long Range Plan for Parks.
Motion carried - unanimous
Commission members were reminded to nominate Crystal Sparkles entries.
The 2015 meeting dates were reviewed.

Locations for 2015 outdoor meetings will be discussed in January. A park tour will be
discussed also.
Staff gave the monthly reports, highlighting major activities.
Ms. Haney gave the Crystal Frolics report. The button contest will be moved up. The
button will be able to be used for prizes as well as some discount offers (TBA). Sunday
will be a Family Festival with entertainment and a petting zoo. Sponsorships are being
sought. The Skate Park competition will be revamped.
Commission members were reminded of Mr. Mathisen’s retirement party on December 5.
Ms. Haney showed the Commission an insert she got from the Sun Post paper – most
members hadn’t seen it. It had community information in it. Ms. Hackett will find out
more about it.
The 5K fundraiser for Rocco is set for September 26, 2015 – more details later.
Ms. Sodd was thanked once again for her service – we will all miss her.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:51pm.
