Minutes
September 4, 2013
Crystal Highlands Park
The Crystal Parks and Recreation Commission meeting was called to order at
7:04 pm by Chairperson Tom Jungroth. Commission members in attendance
were: Ms. Sodd, Ms. Haney, Ms. LaRoche, and Ms. Merriam. Also present were:
City Council Liaison John Budziszewski, Police Lieutenant Dave Oyaas, Mr.
Mathisen, Mr. Rauen and Mr. Berggren from the city staff. In addition, neighbors
from the Crystal Highlands neighborhood were present.
Mr. Mathisen reviewed city projects in progress and in planning. Projects include:
street reconstruction and alley rebuilding. Mr. Mathisen updated the residents
and Commission on the recent solar panel installation at the Crystal Community
Center and discussed the possibility of adding solar panels to City Hall and the
Crystal Cove.
Lieutenant Oyaas talked about general Police happenings. He noted that thefts
from auto have declined, and that the Police Department is actively using
Facebook to assist with solving crimes.
Residents made the following comments on the park/programs:
• Inquired about Rinks and the warming house.
• Noted that the playground and basketball court was well used often.
• A lot of kids and newer families in the neighborhood.
• Asked about adding more benches around the playground, as well as a
drinking fountain on the outside of the building.
• Had a suggestion for the Recreation Department to post flyers/happenings
in the building window so they could see what was going on.
The Commission will consider these comments as planning progresses and keep
the neighborhood informed.
The residents were thanked for their comments and the neighborhood portion of
the meeting was adjourned at 7:45pm.
The Commission business meeting was called to order at 7:50pm.
Mr. Berggren took RSVP’s for the upcoming Commission Dinner. He will forward
the information on to Ms. Van Krevelen at Crystal City Hall. The Commission
were disappointed in the date of the dinner as it conflicts with the Crystal
Business Association Soiree for the 2nd year in a row.
The Commission was pleased with the pool concession numbers. Final figures
will be reported in October.
The Commission enjoys the Dropbox concept and would like to keep using it.
Currently only Mr. Rauen is having troubles accessing the files, however it may
be a network thing.
Mr. Jungroth gave the Chairperson’s report and would like Ms. Hackett to send a
letter to Commission member Joel, who has not been to many meetings. They
would like to know his status because it affects their quorum.
Mr. Budziszewski gave the City Council report. They are working on the 2014
budget. Talked about the solar panels on the Crystal Community Center and
what other opportunities may exist in future years to cut down on rising energy
costs.
Ms. Haney gave the Crystal Frolics report:
• Need a bill from Ms. Hackett
• Wrap-up meeting will take place in September.
Mr. Jungroth gave the Crystal Business Report. They are up to 40 members.
Have generated close to $3,000 and have started donating more.
The monthly reports were given highlighting major activities.
The minutes were approved as sent.
The next meeting is October 2 at The Crystal Community Center.
The meeting was adjourned at 8 pm.
