2010.01.06 PRC Minutes 1 Crystal Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission Minutes January 6, 2010 The Crystal Parks and Recreation Commission meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Chairperson Lynn Haney. Commission members in attendance were: Ms. Merriam, Mr. Lenertz, Ms. Sodd, and Mr. Jungroth. Also present were, Mr. Selton, Council Liaison; Mr. Mathisen, Mr. Rauen, Mr. Berggren and Ms. Hackett from the city staff. The Minutes were approved as corrected. Mr. Selton was introduced as the new City Council liaison to the Commission. The monthly reports were given, highlighting major activities. Ms. Haney gave the Chairperson report. Ms. Josephs resigned from the Commission. Since Ms. Josephs was elected the secretary for 2010, a new secretary is needed. Ms. Kalvik could not attend tonight’s meeting but she offered to fill the position if no one else was interested. The Commission elected Ms. Kalvik as secretary. Ms. Haney suggested emailing a draft copy of the minutes prior to the meeting so that Commission members can be reminded of any “to do” items and if there are any corrections to the minutes. The 2009 work plan was reviewed. The final draft will be prepared for the February meeting. The Commission will work on the 2010 work plan in February. After the 2010 work plan is finalized, committee will be named. Mr. Berggren made a presentation on Active Living Hennepin County. Crystal is a member of this group that promotes active lifestyles in Hennepin County communities. There are several activities/facilities in crystal that can be promoted through this program. The Commission will consider this item for the 2010 work plan during the February discussion. The kids’ letters to the Mayor was discussed. Some of the letters mentioned safe parks. The need for safety is often heard at the outdoor meetings. There may be some programs that can be partnered with the Police Department. This can be part of the 2010 work plan discussion net month. The 2010 meeting dates were set. The outdoor meeting locations are: June 2 North Lions/Broadway @ North Lions July 14 (change from July 7) Cavanaugh/Twin lake Shores @ Cavanaugh August 4 Lions Valley Place/Sunnyview @ Valley Place September 1 Welcome The Dog Park Committee report was given. There is a neighborhood meeting at Bassett Creek this Saturday. The committee raised over $5000 so far. The Disc Golf group did not meet. 2 Ms. Hackett informed the Commission that the city is in the process of preparing a grant application for the Hennepin Youth Sports Program for construction of a soccer field at Forest Park. Ms. Merriam and Ms. Hackett attended the last meeting of the Environmental Quality Commission to discuss the Adopt a Park program. Since the neighbors adopted Memory Lane/Brownwood, the EQC will look at adopting another park. They may be interested in assisting the Park and Recreation Commission promote Adopt A Park. Ms. Hackett will talk to their staff liaison to see if there has been any action taken. The Commission will wait to hear from the EQC. Mr. Selton gave the City Council report. The January meeting has several annual housekeeping duties to perform. The Crystal Frolics Committee did not meet. There was not a Crystal Business Association report. Mr. Jungroth reported that the VFW is going to have a winter event at Twin Oak park later in January. Mr. Selton suggested that the duck houses on Memory Lane may need to be moved higher so they won’t flood. Mr. Rauen will look into this. Signage at Forest park was discussed. Signage would let resident know that the city park is available for use by all. The meeting was adjourned at 8:30pm. Gene Hackett Recorder
