Crystal Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission
Minutes
February 3, 2010
The Crystal Parks and Recreation Commission meeting was called to order at
7:04 p.m. by Chairperson Lynn Haney. Commission members in attendance were: Ms.
Merriam, Ms. Sodd, Ms. Kalvik, Mr. Schuneman and Mr. Jungroth. Also present were,
Mr. Selton, Council Liaison; Mr. Rauen and Ms. Hackett from the city staff.
The Minutes were approved as sent.
The monthly reports were given, highlighting major activities.
Ms. Haney gave the Chairperson report. The after the meeting summary and to do list
was well received by the members.
The 2009 Work Plan was finalized.
Moved by Mr. Jungroth and seconded by Ms. Kalvik to accept the 2009
Work Plan final report. Motion carried – unanimous.
The report will be forwarded to the City Council.
Discussion continued on the 2010 Work Plan. The following items were added:
Disc Golf, Community Gardens, City’s 50 th Anniversary event, Twin Oak Pond – planning
to move the VFW memorial. Ms. Hackett will add these items and the final review and
acceptance will be at the March meeting.
Committee meetings were discussed for March but will be moved to April since the Tree
Board will meet in March. Currently only Mr. Lehnertz is on the Long range Planning
Committee so more members are needed there. The Promotion/Sponsorship
Committee has: Mr. Jungroth, Ms. Haney, Ms. Kalvik, Ms. Sodd, Ms. Merriam and Mr.
Schuneman. Since the Commission is 3 members short, most items will be discussed
by the full Commission.
It was discussed that each meeting should take on one or two work plan items.
Tentative schedule for this is: March – Lions Valley Place Park; April – Becker Park/Park
Safety (invite Police Department); May – Park and Recreation Priorities for the 2011
budget preparation.
Recruitment of new Commission members was discussed. The marquees, social media
and cable 12 will be used. Commission members were asked to talk to neighbors about
the Commission.
The Commission notebooks were updated.
Arbor Day will be held April 17 at Becker Park. Ideas will be discussed at the March
meeting.
The Tree Board will meet Wednesday March 3 at 6:30pm at the CCC. Mr. Burks will
update the Commission on the Forestry Department activity for 2009.

Mr. Selton discussed the upcoming 50 th Anniversary event for the City. The Council is
looking at combing the event with the annual recognition dinner and is looking for input
from the Commissions. The Park and Recreation Commission agreed that combining
the events made sense. More information will be available at a later date.
Mr. Rauen updated the Commission on the Dog Park Committee. The site plan was
revised after the neighborhood meeting. Mr. Rauen reviewed the updated site plan.
After reviewing and discussing the revised plan and cost estimates for a dog park at
Bassett Creek (Attachment C), at the February 3, 2010 regular meeting of the Park and
Recreation Commission, the following motion was made:
Moved by Ms. Sodd and seconded by Mr. Jungroth to recommend to the City
Council that the final plan for the dog park at Bassett Creek Park be accepted and
construction commence when sufficient fund raising has occurred to cover the
cost of the materials needed. Motion Carried – unanimous.
The Disc Golf Committee did not meet.
The EQC decided that they would like to adopt another park since Memory Lane has
been adopted by the neighbors.
Mr. Selton gave the City Council report. The Council passed the Active Living Hennepin
County resolution and made PIR purchases.
Ms. Haney gave the Crystal Frolics Committee report. Several suggestions were given
for Grand Marshall. The Committee is considering keeping the new parade route. The
Sun Post is helping more this year. Additional events are being considered.
Ms. Jungroth gave the Crystal Business Association report. A group invited a speaker to
attend. Pat from Sign-a-rama is the new President.
The next meeting is Wednesday March 3 at 6:30 (Tree Board) and regular Commission
meeting at 7pm.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:08pm.
