Crystal Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission
Minutes
September 2, 2009
Becker Park
The Crystal Parks and Recreation Commission meeting was called to order at
7:04 p.m. by Chairperson Lori Merriam. Commission members in attendance
were: Ms. Josephs, Ms. Haney, Ms. Sodd, Mr. Lehnertz, Ms. Kalvik, Mr.Mueller,
and Mr. Jungroth. Also present were, Ms. Moore, Council Liaison; Ms. Norris,
City manager; Deputy Chief Fealy, Mr. Rauen and Ms. Hackett from the city staff.
No residents were in attendance so that portion of the meeting was cancelled.
Deputy Chief Fealy informed the Commission of the crime statistics for the
Becker area. One of the bigger problems has been vagrants in the park. The
Police Department is working to keep on top of this problem. The Crystal Frolics
went well this year.
Mr. Rauen gave an update on the Memory Lane sign. The sign is installed. The
EQC is sponsoring a clean-up on October 10 from 10am – Noon. Commission
members are welcome to come and help.
Mr. Rauen gave his Department’s monthly report.
The Commission discussed the upcoming presentation by the dog park interest
group. They Commission decided that they would rather hear the group’s
presentation rather than meeting with them prior to discuss their comments.
Since the Commission Dog park Committee was inactive, a new committee was
named: Lynn, Jenny K(?), Sara and Rick.
Mr. Rauen informed the group of the Lions Club project at North Lions Park. A
native prairie planting is planned for the area – the Lions may find a portion of
this.
Ms. Moore gave the City Council report:
· The preliminary levy was set.
· The City Council will not take a raise in 2010.
· The Highway 81 bonds were discussed
· Kennel license applicants were discussed.
· Liquor license applicants were discussed.
Ms. Haney gave the Crystal Frolics report:
· It appears that everyone had a profit.
· There is some discussion regarding the bill from the city – some prep
items should be considered routine park maintenance.
· Skate park event netted $88.

· The Crystal Police did a great job.
Mr. Jungroth gave the Crystal Business Association report:
· The last meeting had an interesting presentation from a local high school
teacher
· The Crystal Care Center is hosting a networking event in September.
The Recreation Monthly report was given, highlighting major activities.
There was not a Chairperson’s report.
The August minutes were approved as amended.
Mr. Jungroth said that a couple of disc golfers talked to him about expanding the
disc golf course. He asked them to write up a proposal and bring it to a future
Commission meeting for discussion.
Commissioners were reminded of the next meeting: 7 p.m. on October 7 at the
Crystal Community Center.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:47pm.
