2009.04.01 PRC Minutes Crystal Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission Minutes April 1, 2009 The Crystal Parks and Recreation Commission meeting was called to order at 7:16 p.m. by Chairperson Lori Merriam. Commission members in attendance were: Ms. Haney, Ms. Josephs, Mr. Lehnertz and Ms. Kalvik. Also present were, Ms. Moore, Council Liaison and Mr. Berggren, Mr. Rauen and Ms. Hackett from the city staff. Also present was Commission applicant Jennifer Sodd, as well as former member Liz Reid and her husband Norm. The minutes were approved as sent. Ms. Reid was given her years of service award for serving 27 years as a member of the Crystal Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission. The award was presented to her by Ms. Merriam. Monthly reports were given. Two new members will be appointed to the Commission at the next council meeting. Ms. Merriam made a call for volunteers, and encouraged all commission members to help when they can at the various Recreations sponsored events. Ms. Hackett talked about the work session that would be held on April 7 th at 6:30 pm in Council Chambers up at City Hall. This is the Commissions opportunity to review 2008 and discuss the 2009 work plan, and the long range plan. In addition, the Commission and Council will discuss the 2010 budget priorities. Ms. Hackett mentioned that the City is slated to loose $1.1 million of LGA for 2010. Mr. Berggren from the Recreation Department discussed the department’s new use of popular social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook. The Recreation Department has pages set up with both sites and is experimenting with ways on how to use it to send information to residents. The Commission discussed both Twitter and Facebook and determined that if we were to only maintain one they would choose Facebook. Mr. Berggren encouraged them all to join Facebook to see what it was like and to offer feedback. The Arbor Day poster contest was judged. Winners were selected and Mr. Berggren will notify them and invite them to Arbor Day. Arbor Day will be held on Saturday April 18 th at Hagemeister from 9-11am Shingle Creek Clean-up Saturday April 25 th at the pond on the east side of County Road 81 just south of the railroad tracks from 9:30-11:30am over Ms. Moore gave the City Council report: · T-mobile has approached the city about putting cell phone towers in our parks. Council is looking at city code. Ms. Moore is against the towers, she feels they are ugly, and not suited for parks. Ms. Haney gave the Crystal Frolics report: · The button contest will be open to kids k-12 from district 281. Flyers will go out to schools the week of April 6 th . Fantasia Salon in Crystal donated $250 for a Nintendo Wii to be the grand prize for winning the button contest. Prizes will also be given away to 2 nd and 3 rd place. Second place will receive a prize valued at $75 and third place will receive a prize valued at $25. Second and third place will also receive 10 buttons made with their submitted design. · There may be no 5k at the Frolics, Ms. Haney is still checking with Ms. Rewie who ran it last year. There was no CBA report. $2,000 was given to the scholarship fund from Bill O’Reilly’s Bike Group that held their annual races at Bassett Creek park. The meeting was adjourned at 8:30pm.
