CRYSTAL PLANNING COMMISSION MINUTES
December 14, 2009
Council Chambers, Crystal City Hall
A. CALL TO ORDER
The regular meeting of the Crystal Planning Commission convened at 7:00 p.m. with the
following members present:

Chair VonRueden asked if there will be a need for sign replacement.
Mr. Sutter stated there is an existing pylon sign and the applicants would likely
just be changing the sign face.
Commissioner Heigel inquired as to the timeline of the move.
Mr. Sutter recommended the applicant answer that question.
Chair VonRueden opened the Public Hearing.
Ryan Politz addressed the commission’s question regarding the timeline for the
move as occurring shortly after March. He also indicated that the building in
question was built in 1984.
Commissioner Buck asked if structural changes will be required inside the
building.
Mr. Politz indicated that partitions will be added for office spaces.
Hearing no further questions or comments, Chair VonRueden closed the public
hearing.
Hearing no further discussion from the Planning Commission, Chair Von Rueden
asked for a motion.
Moved by Commissioner Whitenack and seconded by Commissioner Heigel to
recommend to the City Council to approve Application 2009-18 for a conditional
use permit to allow motor vehicle sales (CarHop) at 5417 Lakeland Avenue North
(formerly HOM Furniture) including the six recommendations outline in the staff
report and, additionally, restriction of the hours of operation to not earlier than
6:00 a.m. or later than 9:00 p.m.
Motion carried.

F. GENERAL INFORMATION
1. City Council actions on recent Planning Commission items
2. Staff preview of likely agenda items for the January 11, 2009 meeting include the
election of officers and possibly one item that will require commission action.
Commissioner Strand asked about the houses being sold along Hwy. 81. Mr. Sutter
explained that the homes are being marketed by MnDOT on behalf of Hennepin
County to sell and be moved from their current sites. If they are not sold and moved,
they will be demolished by the county.

Commissioner Strand asked if, when the city demolishes buildings, individuals are
given an opportunity to remove reusable items from the property. Mr. Sutter said
generally no, but if the demolition crew feels it is safe and the interested person is
on-site at the time, they may be allowed to salvage items. Certain items are
recycled through third parties.

Moved by Commissioner Buck and seconded by Commissioner Heigel to adjourn.
