Memorandum
DATE: June 16, 2015
TO: City Council
FROM: Mark Ray, PE, Public Works Director
SUBJECT: Gaulke Pond Study
Summary
With the relocation of the new public works facility, the opportunity has presented itself
to evaluate repurposing a portion of the existing public works maintenance facility
campus.
Specific goals of the repurposing include:
1) Expansion of the water storage capability of Gaulke pond to help reduce
potential local area flooding as well as reduce water storage needs upstream
(especially at Memory pond) during high precipitation events.
2) Creation of a materials storage area at the site so the current storage area at
Bassett Creek Park can be eliminated.
This project was briefly discussed on the City bus tour in May.
Staff solicited proposals from three consultants (Barr, SRF Consulting, and Stantec) for
analysis and design services for the Gaulke Pond area. Barr had the lowest proposal
cost while still providing an acceptable project understanding and scope of deliverables.
Barr is a local engineering firm with extensive watershed experience.
The timeline for the construction portion of the project is dependent on the scope of
work and associated costs in order to meet the goals for the repurposing. Currently, it is
anticipated that the project will take place starting in 2016 and ending in 2017.
